It was originally known as "La Fayette", and it was incorporated on January 15, 18,21. Fayette County was established in 1824. The town's official name was "Fayette House". However, it was known as "Fayetteville" on maps and in the U.S. Census 1880-1890. In 1898, it was officially abbreviated to "Fayette".
Victor and Lucy Patterson started manufacturing Golden Eagle Syrup at Fayette in 1928. It is still made locally at a Fayette manufacturing plant.
