It was divided first among the neighboring counties. Most of it belonged to DeKalb or Cherokee counties. It was divided and created as Baine County by the first postwar legislature on December 7, 1866. The name was given to General David W. Baine, Confederate Army. Gadsden was chosen as the county seat.
Postwar tensions and insurgent actions against freedmen led to the creation of a new county. It was replaced by an existing one on December 1, 1868. The name Etowah County is derived from a Cherokee word. The majority of Cherokee were removed by the 1830s to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River.
Etowah County was plagued by racial discrimination, injustice, and Jim Crow. Between 1877 and 1950, it had one documented lynching that took place in 1906. Bunk Richardson was an innocent African-American who was only associated with a case where a white woman had been raped and then killed. After two men were executed for the crime, the governor commuted the death sentence of one defendant.
An F4 tornado struck here on Palm Sunday, March 27, 1994. Twelve minutes after the National Weather Service of Birmingham issued an advisory for northern Calhoun and southeastern Etowah counties, it struck Piedmont's Goshen United Methodist Church.
