Elmore County was created on February 15, 1866, from parts of Autauga and Tallapoosa counties.
In 1717, the French founded Fort Toulouse at the confluence between the Tallapoosa and Coosa rivers.
After the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Gen. Andrew Jackson built Fort Jackson on the site of Fort Toulouse in 1814.
Robert White was lynched by a mob on July 2, 1901. Strangely, George White, a local farmer confessed to the murder and named five others as his killers in court. Three men were convicted of the murder and sentenced to ten-year imprisonment. Governor Jelks pardoned them on 9 June 1902. Another Black man was taken from the local jail in 1915 and killed.
The county seat of Wetumpka was home to a City Planning Board in 1950.
The National Guard Armory, built in Wetumpka County in 1957, was inaugurated.
