The Alabama legislature created DeKalb County on January 9, 1836, from land that was ceded to the Federal government under duress by the Cherokee Nation before their forced expulsion to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River.
Named after Major General Baron Johann de Kalb, the county was created.
Fort Payne is the county seat. It was built around the fort of the exact same name in the 1830s to inter Cherokee of the region before their removal.
This area was home to Sequoyah, a Cherokee man who created the Cherokee Syllabary, a written system that he used for his language. It was in the 19th century. He was born in Cherokee, Tennessee, and moved to this area in the early 1800s. His efforts enabled the Cherokee to publish The Phoenix, the first Native American newspaper. It was published in Cherokee and English.
