Crenshaw County was created by the Reconstruction-era legislature after the American Civil War, which took place on November 30, 1866. It was created from parts of the counties of Lowndes, Coffee, Covington, and Pike. This county was located in the coast area but had very poor soils which limited cotton and other agricultural activities. For all types of labor, its planters employed enslaved African Americans. Their descendants remained in the region, and almost one-quarter of the county's population is African American.
After the Montgomery and Florida Railroad Company built a line through Crenshaw County in 1886, Crenshaw County was a hub for timbering in the Piney Wood area. It provided transportation to timber markets. It connected to Sprague Junction, Montgomery County, Alabama. Timber camps were areas of rough work where racial tensions occasionally flared.
