The area was settled by settlers who came from South Carolina and Georgia in the 1818-18 period. Evergreen was officially established in 1819 by James Cosey, a Revolutionary War veteran, and other men who settled within its current limits. Evergreen was first named by Reverend Alexander Travis because of the abundance of greenery, plants, and other ferns.
During the Civil War, a federal raid destroyed the Sparta County seat. The county seat of Sparta was relocated to Evergreen in 1866 because it was centrally located within the county. Evergreen became a city in March 1873.
A tornado struck the city in 1882 and destroyed every building, except the Episcopal church. Every business and every house on the east side was destroyed by fire on November 7, 1895. Five days later, every house and business on the west side of the railroad was destroyed by fire. Conecuh County Courthouse was set on fire in 1868-1875, 1885 and 1885 respectively, and 1895.
Barbara Allen Rainey, the first female pilot in U.S. Navy, was killed in an accident in 1982 near Evergreen.
