Heflin was established as a station along the Atlanta railroad line in 1882. The town grew quickly and was incorporated as a city in 1886. Edwardsville was the County Seat of Cleburne County up until 1905. An election was held in 1905 to move the county seat of Cleburne County from Edwardsville to Heflin. Heflin won the election results, which were appealed and upheld on July 1, 1906, by the Alabama Supreme Court.
The city is situated in the eastern central part of Georgia, approximately 15 miles west of the Alabama-Georgia border. The southern portion of the city is covered by Interstate 20. Exits 199 and 205 provide access to the city. Birmingham is located 76 miles west of Atlanta via I-20. Atlanta is 72 miles east. The city is also served by two state routes and U.S. Route 78.
