Cherokee County was established on January 9, 1836. It is named after the Cherokee people who lived there once upon a time. In Turkeytown, near the present city of Centre, lived the famous Cherokee chief Pathkiller. The county seat was established in Cedar Bluff, which became the new town. However, the county seat moved to Centre in 1844. Because of its central location, the name was chosen and is spelled in British English. Centre became an alcoholic beverage-friendly city in 2011.
