Benton County was created on December 18, 1832. Its name is in honor of Thomas Hart Benton who was a member from Missouri of the United States Senate. Jacksonville was the county seat. Benton was a slave owner and an ally to John C. Calhoun. He was also a slaveholder, planter, and slaveholder. However, Benton and Calhoun diverged in their political views during the 1820s-1840s. Calhoun became more interested in using the threat of secession as an instrument to expand and maintain slavery throughout the United States. Benton was, however, slowly coming to terms with slavery's wrongness and the importance of preserving the union. Alabama supporters of slavery objected to Benton's decision and renamed Benton County Calhoun County on January 29, 1858.
