The Alabama Territorial Legislature created Blount County on February 6, 1818. It was formed from land that the Creek Nation had ceded to the federal government on August 9, 1814. This county is named after Governor Willie Blount, a Tennessee native who helped settlers in Alabama during Creek War. This county is located in the northeastern quadrant, also known as the Alabama mineral region. Blount County borders Cullman and Marshall counties. Jefferson, Walker, Etowah, Jefferson, and Walker are also included. The Black Warrior River drains this county through the Locust River and Mulberry Forks. Blount County is 650 miles in area. Blount County is home to the Warrior coalfield.
John Jones and Caleb Fryley founded Bear Meat Cabin back in 1816. It opened its post office in 1821. The settlement was then incorporated as Blountsville, on December 13, 1827. The county seat was transferred to Oneonta in Alabama after an 1889 election.
