About Baldwin County, Alabama

Baldwin County was founded on December 21, 1809, ten years before Alabama became a state. The county was previously part of the Mississippi Territory, until 1817 when it became an independent Alabama Territory. Alabama was granted statehood in 1819.

As the population grew, there have been many border changes. Other counties were also formed. During the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War, many armies invaded.

The county seat was McIntosh Bluff, located on the Tombigbee River, in the early days of Baldwin County. In 1820, the county seat was transferred from McIntosh Bluff to Blakeley. Then it was moved to Daphne in 1868. The legislature of Alabama authorized the county seat to be moved to Bay Minette in 1900. However, Daphne opposed this move.
