About Autauga County, Alabama

Autauga County was created by the Alabama Territorial Legislature on November 21, 1818. The county also included Elmore County and Chilton County. Autauga Indians were living here at the time. They were concentrated in Atagi, a village on the banks of a creek with the same name. It is a tributary to the Alabama River.

The Autauga was a tribe of the Alibamu tribe and was named after its geographic location. The Creek Confederacy eventually absorbed the Alibamu. The Creek War saw Andrew Jackson invade the region. As part of the War of 1812, the Autaga sent many soldiers to resist. This was the part of the territory that the Creek Confederacy had retaken in 1814 under the Treaty of Fort Jackson.
