How DUI Classes Work

Being ordered to take DUI classes is one of the lesser penalties for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI). DUI classes are designed to rehabilitate the defendant and ensure that they don’t reoffend. This article examines what DUI classes are, how long they take, and what they entail.

The length of time of the DUI classes depends upon the state and the number of DUIs. For example, a first-time DUI defendant in Arizona would need to take a 16-hour DUI education class. That same first-time offender would need to take a 12-hour course if they lived in Florida or California.

The more times the defendant has been convicted, the longer the education classes will be. California drivers on their third DUI may be required to complete a 30-month DUI class, featuring “78 hours of group counseling; 12 hours of alcohol and drug education; 120-300 hours of community service; and close and regular individual interviews.”

These DUI classes are not free. In Florida, DUI classes start at $285. The courses could be as broad as “DUI education” or as specific as Victim Awareness programs or Ignition Interlock Device classes. Any courses that the court assigns a defendant must be purchased and completed within 90 days or penalties will be applied.

If you are facing a DUI charge, you will need a DUI attorney to help defend you. Unlike a standard public defender, a DUI attorney specializes in pleading down and dismissing charges like yours. Additionally, a private DUI attorney can give your case the full attention it deserves, expending the necessary time and resources to get you the best possible outcome.
