Vallejo was the home of a Class D minor-league baseball club in the early 1900s. They were sometimes called the "Giants" or "The Vallejos" by local newspapers. Ping Bodie, a future Chicago White Sox center-fielder and Pacific Coast League star, played for Vallejo in the 1908 season. The team reached the California state championship game. In the 1920s, the team was disbanded. It is now home to the independent Pacific Association Vallejo Admirals.
Mare Island Naval Shipyard was an important submarine facility during WW II. It was used for both constructing and overhauling ships.
The Zodiac Killer, a serial killer active in Northern California in the 1960s, was known as "The Zodiac Killer". Although he claimed to have killed 37 people, the true number is not known. Three murders that were attributed to Zodiac Killer occurred within the city or near it. The murders were investigated by both the Vallejo Police Department (and the San Francisco Police Department), but neither was able to solve them. In April 2004, the case was declared inactive.
