After the American Conquest of California, San Luis Obispo County was established. It is still the county's center. The region was known for its lawlessness in the early American period. Because of its endemic problem, it was known as "Barrio del Tigre". For several years, robberies and murders without witnesses were committed along the El Camino Real as well as elsewhere in San Luis Obispo. A gang of eight men robbed the Rancho San Juan Capistrano del Camote with three murders and kidnapped two people. This was in May 1858. One of the suspects in the gang, Pio Linares was killed and six other men were lynched. This led to the creation of a County vigilance committee. The committee members remained influential in the community for many decades.
