About Lucas County, Ohio

After years of conflict, the Battle of Fallen Timbers saw the victory of American forces under General Anthony Wayne over the allied Indian forces. It took place near Maumee on August 20, 1794. After the defeat of the Native force, the Northwest Territory was opened for white settlement. The Odawa people had trade relations with Fort Detroit and the French since 1701. They occupied the majority of Northwest Ohio. Other Odawa were found in southeast Michigan and further north on this peninsula. They gave up a lot of the territory in the Treaty of Greenville, but they retained control of the lands along the Maumee River through the War of 1812. Ottokee, the grandson of Chief Pontiac's last Odawa tribe, left the Maumee River region to go to Kansas in 1839.
