The waterways were occupied by ancient Indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European exploration. Caddoan Mississippian culture was one of the many cultures. It developed around 1000CE and occupied different sites in Arkansas. This was the Mississippian culture's westernmost expression. It developed a network of centers and many networks throughout the Mississippi Valley, and its tributaries, and created a wide range of economic development. The Caddoans built substantial earthwork mounds throughout Texas and Arkansas. The largest of these in Arkansas is Battle Mound Site. It was constructed in present-day Lafayette County between 1200 and 1400 CE. Archeological evidence shows that there was continuity between the Caddoan Mississippian people and the historical Caddo people, as well as related Caddo language speakers, who met the first Europeans. Their descendants created the Caddo Nation in Oklahoma today.
