After the flooding of the Conecuh River, and the surrounding lowlands, Andalusia saw its first settlement in 1841. Citizens were forced to move to higher ground after the floods. In 1844, the county seat was moved to Andalusia from Montezuma. Andalusia is likely to have its name from Spanish explorers and settlers, as the land on which the town is situated was Spanish Florida before Pinckney's Treaty of 1795. Andalusia shares its name in common with Andalusia, an autonomous community in southern Spain. Although the original name of the new town was "New Site", it was later renamed to Andalusia when a post office was opened in 1846.
In 1884, Andalusia was made a city.
Two railroad lines, the Central of Georgia Railroad and the L & N Railroad, arrived in Andalusia in 1899. The town grew quickly.
The Avant House is one of seven Andalusia sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
