About Springfield, Massachusetts

In 1636, Springfield was established. It is the first New World Springfield. Because of its central position, George Washington designated Springfield as the location of the Springfield Armory in the late 1800s. It was also the location of Shays’ Rebellion. It would play an important role in Civil War as a stop on Underground Railroad. The city was also home to John Brown, the abolitionist. He is best known for his raid at Harpers Ferry, And for Armory's production of the "Springfield rifles", which were used extensively by Union soldiers. The largest collection of historical American firearms is now in the national park. It was closed during the Johnson administration.

The city is today the largest in western New England and the urban, financial, and media capital for Massachusetts' Connecticut River Valley. It is also commonly known as the Pioneer Valley. Springfield is known by many nicknames: "The City of Firsts", because of the many innovations that were made there. These include the first American dictionary, the first American gas-powered automobile, and the first machining lathe for interchangeable components. "The City of Homes", because of its Victorian architecture, and "Hoop City", because the Canadian James Naismith invented basketball in Springfield in 1891.
