In 1636, Springfield was established. It is the first New World Springfield. Because of its central position, George Washington designated Springfield as the location of the Springfield Armory in the late 1800s. It was also the location of Shays’ Rebellion. It would play an important role in Civil War as a stop on Underground Railroad. The city was also home to John Brown, the abolitionist. He is best known for his raid at Harpers Ferry, And for Armory's production of the "Springfield rifles", which were used extensively by Union soldiers. The largest collection of historical American firearms is now in the national park. It was closed during the Johnson administration.
