About Spokane County, Washington

Spokane County is administered by a partisan board consisting of one commissioner from each of the three districts. They are elected in a partisan primary in their respective districts and then run for the countywide office in the general election. The sheriff, auditors, assessors, treasurers, and prosecutors are all elected officials. These offices are also partisan. Spokane County is home to a medical examiner. Spokane County's current commissioners are Mary Kuney and Al French.

Spokane Regional Transportation Council is responsible for transportation planning in the county. This organization was established in 1962. It distributes federal funds and state funds to transportation projects and updates the long-range transportation plan of Spokane County.

Since 1948, the county has been a Republican-leaning state except for three occasions. Lyndon Johnson was the last Democrat to win a majority in the county. In both elections, it gave Bill Clinton a plurality. Spokane and Cheney are the strongholds of Democratic power, while suburban areas tend to be heavily Republican.
