The Plaza Theater was established in downtown Laredo in 1946. It closed in 1999 when the municipality purchased the property from United Artists. The 2001 feasibility study was authorized by the Laredo City Council to see what the theater could be used for. A consultant recommended that the Plaza be converted into a multipurpose performing arts center with live theatre, dance recitals, and concerts. The city was awarded an economic development grant in 2006 to renovate the Plaza. In 2008, the theater's marquee was renovated and the blade design was updated. Two Laredo businessmen, Victor Trevino Jr. and Danny Lopez Jr. tried to form a public-private partnership in 2011. However, that effort never happened. The city council approved the solicitation of nonprofit and private entities to run the theater in 2018. For the design and concept of the renovations, the council seeks input from architects.
