About Clark County, Washington

Clark County was established as the District Vancouver on July 27, 1844. It encompassed all of the land west of the Rocky Mountains and north of Alaska. The name of the provisional government was changed to Vancouver County in 1845. It stretched from the Columbia River to 54° 40 minutes North Latitude, now British Columbia. The current boundary between the United States and Canada was approved by the United States Senate on June 15, 1846.

The Oregon Territory was established by President James K. Polk on August 13, 1848. The borders were modified by the Oregon Territorial Legislature on September 3, 1849. Clarke County was named in his honor. It included all of Washington at that time and continued to be subdivided until it reached its current area in 1880. The spelling of the name was changed to its current form in 1925.

The Yacolt Burn, which was the state's largest ever, erupted in Skamania County in September 1902. It swept west along a 12-mile front from Yacolt and nearly consumed the town. The lucrative business of salvaging the timber was once again a success.
