The area was home to the Bay Miwok before colonization. In 1891, the San Ramon Valley Branch Line of Southern Pacific began service with two flag stops in Pleasant Hill. These were Hookston and Sparkle. This is where the Southern Pacific Railway and Sacramento Northern Railway intersected. Today, Pleasant Hill BART station can be found. After prohibition, the area was redeveloped for housing and many of the local vineyards were destroyed. Monument Boulevard was named for the Soldiers Memorial Monument, which commemorates veterans and war dead of World War I from Contra Costa County. It was built at the intersection between Monument Boulevard and Contra Costa Highway. It depicts three soldiers, one of them black, and the other white. It measures 45 feet high and is made of concrete formed. It weighs 150 tonnes. The monument was moved to its current location at the intersection of Boyd Road & Contra Costa Boulevard in 1954 to make room for State Route 21.
