Westchester County is divided into six primary drainage basins or watersheds. These include the Upper and Lower Long Island Sound, the Bronx and Upper Hudson, Lower Hudson, and Croton River basins. There are 60 subwatersheds or smaller basins within these primary drainage basins. The main streams that drain the southern portion of the county are Beaver Swamp Brook (Blind Brook), Bronx River and Hutchinson Rivers, Mamaroneck Rivers, Saw Mill Rivers, Sheldrake Rivers, Stephenson Brooks, and Tibbetts Brook. Byram River is the mainstream that drains the county's central portion. The main streams that drain the northern portion of the county are Dickey Brook and Furnace Brook. Hallocks Mill Brook, Hunter Brook. Muscoot River. Peekskill Hollow Brook. And Titicus River. There are several important reservoirs in the county. The Croton system as well as the Kensico Reservoir make up the New York City water supply system. It is a network of lakes and reservoirs in northern Westchester and Putnam Counties, which together provide 10% of New York City's water supply. This can be increased to 30% during drought conditions. The system's components include the New Croton Reservoir and Cross River Reservoirs, the Titicus Reservoirs, the Titicus Reservoirs, the Amawalk Reservoir, and the Muscoot Reservoir. The Kensico Reservoir and Byram Lake Reservoir are two other major reservoirs. There are also a few smaller reservoirs scattered throughout the county.
