Shasta County, one of the first counties in California, was established in 1850 when the state became a state. Named after Mount Shasta, the county is named for the Shasta people. Their population fell in the 1850s because of disease, low birth rates, and starvation. White settlers also brought about mass killings. The original name of the tribe was written in many ways before the current version was adopted when the county was created. Mt. Originally, Mt.
