Davidson County is one of the oldest counties in the 41-county region, of Middle Tennessee. It was established in 1783 shortly after the American Revolution ended. The North Carolina legislature named the county in honor of William Lee Davidson who was killed fighting the crossing of Catawba River on February 1, 1781, by General Cornwallis's British troops. Nashville is the county seat and it was established by James Robertson during the winter of 1779-80, and the final days of the Revolutionary War.
To establish a basic rule and protect their land titles, the first white settlers created the Cumberland Compact. The Native American tribes of the Cherokee, Muscogee, and Shawnee reacted hostilely to the arrivals in the area during the 1780s. The many archaeological sites in Davidson County prove that Native American cultures have occupied the area for thousands of years. Fur traders were the first white Americans to arrive in the region. The fur traders were followed by long hunters who heard of a large salt lick called French Lick where they hunted game for trade and also traded with Native Americans.
