About Worcester, Massachusetts

The Blackstone Canal and railroad transport made Worcester an industrial city. They also produced wire and textiles. The city's population grew rapidly due to large numbers of European immigrants. However, the city's manufacturing sector declined after World War II. The decline in population and long-term economic growth didn't reverse until the 1990s when new immigrants, higher education, medicine, and biotechnology made their mark. Since 1980, the city's population has increased by 28%. It reached a new record high of 218 and is currently experiencing urban renewal.

Modern Worcester is well-known for its diversity and large immigrant community. There are significant populations of Vietnamese, Brazilians, and other nationalities. 22% were born in Worcester from outside the United States. It is home to eight colleges and universities. These include Holy Cross, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, (WPI), Clark University, and seven others. Worcester is known for its many triple-decker houses from the 19th century, Victorian-era mill architecture, and lunch car diners like Miss Worcester.
