Bernalillo County was among seven established under Mexican rule. In 1852, Bernalillo became one of the nine original counties of New Mexico Territory. Bernalillo County was named after the town Bernalillo. It is no longer part of the county. Previously, the county's capital was established in Albuquerque by the towns of Bernalillo and Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. It was absorbed into Santa Ana County in 1876.
