Sherman Oaks was developed by Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman Sherman, a partner in the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company. Sherman Oaks would be created by the company subdividing 1,000 acres of land. Each acre sold for $780 in 1927. Sherman's second major venture was the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad.
A group of homeowners in Chandler Estates successfully petitioned Zev Yaroslavsky, former Los Angeles City Councilmember, to redraw Sherman Oaks' boundaries from Magnolia to Burbank Blvd to their north and Coldwater Canyon to Van Nuys Blvd west. The goal was to include their neighborhood. The San Fernando Valley was not the first to request this. Other neighborhoods had also requested to alter their names or to be attached to more wealthy neighborhoods. The residents claimed that Sherman Oaks was once part of the area, but it was renamed Van Nuys in 1962 when ZIP codes were created. A resident provided a property deed as support for the claim.
