About Bexar County, Texas

Bexar County was established on December 20, 1836. It covered almost all of Texas' western region. It included the unrest in eastern New Mexico, northward to Wyoming. 128 counties were created from its territory after statehood.

San Antonio de Bexar was one of 23 Mexican municipalities in Texas at the time Texas gained independence. The county was named after him. San Antonio de Bexar, originally Villa de San Fernando de Bexar, was the first civil government established in Texas by the Spanish. The municipality was established in 1731 by 55 Canary Islanders who settled near the San Antonio River mission system. The Presidio San Antonio, a Spanish military outpost that protected missions, was the name of the new settlement. The Presidio is located at San Pedro Springs and was established in 1718. It was named after Viceroy Balthasar Manuel de Zuniga y Guzman Sotomayor y Smiento, the second son of Duke of Bejar. San Antonio de Bejar is also the name of San Antonio, a modern city in Texas.
