About Norfolk, Virginia

The city of Norfolk began a long effort to revitalize its urban core. Granby Street was in decline while Norfolk's city leaders focused their attention on the waterfront and its collection of decrepit piers, warehouses, and other structures. Many old shipping and warehousing buildings were destroyed. Planners built a new boulevard called Waterside Drive to replace them. Along this avenue, many of the tallest buildings on Norfolk's skyline were erected. The Waterside festival market was created by The Rouse Company and the city in 1983 to bring people back to the waterfront. It also helps to catalyze downtown redevelopment. 2017 saw the redevelopment of Waterside. The waterfront also hosts the Nauticus maritime Museum and the USS Wisconsin. In the years that followed, other facilities were built, including Harbor Park baseball stadium, which is home to the Norfolk Tides Triple-A minor league baseball team. Baseball America ranked the park as the best facility for minor league baseball in 1995. The efforts of Norfolk to revitalize its downtown have received praise from urban planning and economic development circles across the country. The city's growing fortunes downtown helped increase its revenues and allowed it to focus on other neighborhoods.
