About Bibb County, Georgia

The cotton gin was created in the 18th century to make short-staple cotton more profitable. This was able to be grown in the South's uplands, as opposed to the Long-staple Cotton of the Low Country. Bibb is one of the "Black Belt" counties, which was originally a reference to the rich dark soil of these uplands. European-American planters developed the area by using enslaved African Americans to work on clearing land and developing large cotton plantations in the antebellum era. Because cotton was in high demand in the textile mills in England and the northern states, it generated large profits. The 1860 census showed that more than one million African Americans had been enslaved in Georgia just before the American Civil War. They also constituted the majority of the Black Belt population.
