Tippecanoe County, Indiana is renowned for its scenic landscapes, historic landmarks and vibrant economy. The county seat of Lafayette houses Purdue University - one of the nation's top universities. The name of the county comes from its namesake river that runs through it and played an important role in shaping its development throughout history.
One remarkable fact about Tippecanoe County is its role as the site of the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. This battle pitted Indiana Territory Governor William Henry Harrison's forces against a confederation of Native American tribes led by Shawnee chief Tecumseh, ending with an impressive victory for Harrison's forces and serving as a turning point in the struggle for control of America's Midwest region.
Tippecanoe County boasts several notable alumni, such as astronaut Neil Armstrong who was born in Wapakoneta but spent much of his childhood here. Armstrong went on to study at Purdue University and eventually became the first person to walk on the moon. Another notable native son is George Ade (1866 - 1900), a humorist and playwright renowned for his humorous takes on social issues. His works, such as "The County Chairman", became classic classics among audiences everywhere.
In addition to the Battle of Tippecanoe, Indiana has witnessed several other noteworthy events throughout its history. Perhaps most infamous was the Purdue Wreck of 1903 when a train carrying members of Purdue football team collided with a freight train near Indianapolis and killed 14 people - including 12 members of their football squad. This tragedy left an indelible mark on college sports history and remains memorialized today as one of college sports' worst tragedies.
