Stanislaus County was historically divided economically and socially by the San Joaquin River. This river provided a barrier to trade and travel throughout much of its history. The Stanislaus County west has been isolated from the main rail corridors and irrigation projects that have generated much of the region’s economic prosperity. It is largely rural and dependent on agriculture. This area is close to Interstate 5 and California Aqueduct, so Patterson and Newman have seen tremendous growth. They are now being converted into commuter communities from the San Francisco Bay Area. Others, however, remain small farming communities.
