The Ozark Mountains' foothills begin in southwest St. Louis County. Most of the rest is a plateau. Due to its rugged topography, the western portion of the county is the least developed. The Mississippi River runs south and the Bluffs rise 200-300 feet above river level. The Chesterfield Valley is located in the western portion of the county along the Missouri River. It is a major floodplain area. The area was once known as "Gumbo Flats", due to its rich, dark soil. It was submerged by water at least ten feet during the Great Flood in 1993. The Corps of Engineers built a stronger levee and allowed construction to be done in the floodplain.
Columbia Bottom, a floodplain located in northeastern Missouri at the confluence between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers is conserved as a conservation area that is open to the public. Although the Missouri Bottom was originally developed for agriculture, it is now being developed for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes. The River des Peres flows through the county's interior before entering the City of St. Louis via underground channels. It was allowed to resurface and now forms the boundary between St. Louis County and St. Louis City. Coldwater Creek flows into the Missouri River, Bonhomme Creek, and Creve Coeur Creek; Keifer Creek runs into Fishpot Creek and Grand Glaize Creek; Gravois Creek flows into River des Peres; Gravois Creek flows into River des Peres; Maline Creek flows into the Mississippi River. The highest point is 904 feet.
