Fort Chaffee is still the county's economic lynchpin, but it also has had a significant cultural impact. The fort served as a processing center for over 50,000 Vietnamese War refugees in the 1970s. Some of these refugees remained in Fort Smith, where they founded two Vietnamese Buddhist temples and one Laotian temple. The fort served as a processing center for Cuban refugees in 1980. National attention was drawn to the county when 2,000-3,000 refugees protested the conditions they were being held. The Arkansas National Guard took command of the fort in 1997. Some portions of the base were given to the state for development, including industrial and commercial redevelopment. The fort was used as temporary housing in 2005 for over 10,000 people displaced from Louisiana, Texas, or Mississippi by Hurricane Katrina. In movies made in the 1980s such as Biloxi Blues or A Soldier's Story, the fort and its surroundings were also featured.
