About Linn County, Iowa

Linn County is located in eastern Iowa and is the second-most populous county in the state. It is home to Cedar Rapids, which is the second-largest city in Iowa. Linn County is named after Lewis F. Linn, a senator from Missouri who advocated for Iowa statehood. The county is bordered by the Cedar River to the south and the Wapsipinicon River to the east, and it is part of the Eastern Iowa region.

Linn County has a rich history, with evidence of Native American occupation dating back thousands of years. In the 1800s, the area became a hub for trade and transportation, as the Cedar River provided a convenient means of shipping goods. Linn County played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, with many abolitionists helping escaped slaves find freedom in the north. During the 20th century, Linn County became a center for manufacturing and technology, with many prominent companies, including Quaker Oats, Collins Aerospace, and Rockwell Collins, calling the county home.

Several famous people have lived in Linn County, including actor Ashton Kutcher, who grew up in the town of Homestead. Grant Wood, the famous American painter known for his work depicting rural American life, was born in Anamosa, a town located in the northwest corner of the county. The county is also home to the Indian Creek Nature Center, which features more than 10 miles of hiking trails and is a popular destination for birdwatching and nature photography.

In 2008, Linn County experienced a devastating flood that caused significant damage to the Cedar Rapids area. The flood was caused by heavy rains and melting snow, and it resulted in widespread damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Despite the devastation, the community rallied together to rebuild, and today Cedar Rapids is a thriving city with a vibrant downtown and strong economy.
