About King County, Washington

The King County Council approved a motion on February 24, 1986, to rename the county in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. It kept the name "King County" but changed its namesake. The motion stated that William Rufus DeVane King, a slaveowner, "earned his income and maintained his lifestyle by oppressing, exploiting, and killing other human beings." Martin Luther King Jr.'s contributions are well-documented, celebrated by millions across this nation, and "exemplify the attributes of which the citizens in King County can be proud and claim as theirs."

The state cannot charter counties, so the change was only made official when Governor Christine Gregoire signed Senate Bill 5332 into law. This provided that King County would be renamed in the honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. effective July 24, 2005.
