The 2011 Super Outbreak brought a half-mile-wide EF4 tornado to Tuscaloosa on April 27th. The tornado caused at least 44 deaths, more than 1000 injuries, and severe devastation. Officials from Tuscaloosa's DCH Hospital reported that they treated more than 1000 people injured in the initial days following the tornado. Mayor Maddox stated that there are "neighborhoods that have been practically removed from the map." After touring the Tuscaloosa tornado damage, President Barack Obama stated that he had never seen such devastation.
Since then, the community has received more than $1 billion in private and public funding. NPR's 2021 Tuscaloosa City Council President said that "Black, White, Young, and Old come together and we worked through it and made Tuscaloosa what is today."
