Columbia College was the first major institution of higher education in the region, established a few years before the University of Oregon. The college was destroyed by two fires within four years. After the second, it decided to not rebuild. Columbia College was once located in the south Eugene area known as College Hill. Today, there is no college.
The initial funding was raised by the town to establish a public university. Later, the University of Oregon was established with the goal of making the small town a hub of learning. The Legislative Assembly approved a bill in 1872 that established the University of Oregon as an institution of the state. In the contest for the state university, Eugene beat Albany. J.H.D., a community member, donated the hilltop land for the campus in 1873. Henderson donated the hilltop land overlooking the city to the campus.
In 1876, the university was inaugurated by the regents who elected the first faculty and named John Wesley Johnson president. On October 16, 1876, the first students registered. The first building was built in 1877. It was named Deady Hall after Judge Matthew P. Deady, the first President of the Board of Regents.
