Durham County is a member of the Triangle J Council of Governments. The current Durham County board of commissioners is composed of five members: Chair Brenda A. Howerton; Vice Chair Wendy Jacobs; Nimasheena Burns; Heidi Carter; and Nida Allem. Each member is elected simultaneously and serves a 4-year term. Clarence Birkhead is the current Sheriff of the County. He was elected in 2018.
