About Montgomery County, Tennessee

Montgomery County is located in an area of highly developed karst topography. Dunbar Cave is a large cave system located in Montgomery County. It is the center of Dunbar Cave State Park. This park covers approximately 110 acres.

Prehistoric Indians used Dunbar Cave extensively, and they inhabited the area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Archaeologists found many artifacts in the cave that were left behind by the cane torches they used. On January 15, 2005, Park Ranger Amy Wallace, Joe Douglas, Billyfrank Morrison, Geologist Larry E. Matthews, and History professor Joe Douglas explored the cave. They discovered Indian glyphs along the cave's walls. Archaeologists from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville later confirmed that the drawings were made by people of the Mississippian culture. This culture was active between 1000 and 1300 CE. These glyphs were displayed for a few more years during the tour of the cave.
