Murrieta wasn't populated for most of its history. Domingo Pujol and Francisco Sanjurjo purchased 52,000 acres of Rancho Pauba Mexican land grants. Ezequiel went back to Spain, and Juan Murrieta took over the land. Juan brought 7,000 sheep to the valley and used the meadows as a feed source for his sheep. In 1876, the partnership was dissolved and Juan Murrieta and Ezequiel retained 15,000 acres of northern Temecula Rancho. Juan Murrieta and Ezequiel granted a right of way, one hundred feet in width, to the California Southern Railroad through Temecula Rancho on March 28, 1882, in order that the railroad could be built through the valley.
The Temecula Land and Water Company bought 14,500 acres from Juan Murrieta in 1884 and mapped a location along the California Southern Railroad. After the 1887 construction of a depot connecting Murrieta with the Southern California Railroad's transcontinental route, others discovered the valley. Around 800 people lived in Murrieta by 1890. Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa has spent millions of dollars to restore and rebuild the resort rooms and occupy large swathes of the site. Tourists, the lifeblood of Murrieta, were much more difficult to find when the trains stopped in 1935. Murrieta was left as a small, rural town after the boom it had experienced thanks to the train and hot springs.
