In Mill Valley, small businesses declined in the 1980s and 1990s. After being open for almost 86 years, Lockwood's Pharmacy was closed in 1981. O'Leary's, Old Mill Tavern, and Tamalpais Hardware closed their doors. Boutiques, gourmet grocery stores, specialty clothing shops, coffee shops, galleries, and art galleries took their place. Downtown Plaza and Lytton square were renovated to reflect this new outlook. Over 13,000 people moved into the city, and many narrow streets became clogged with traffic. The Public Library was expanded to include a Children's Room and a downstairs Fiction Room. There are also Internet computers. To give patrons more information, it joined MARINet. This consortium includes all Marin public libraries. MARINet now offers patrons an online catalog of all materials in Marin's public libraries. Patrons can pick up and drop off materials at any participating library. The Old Mill was also given a makeover. It was rebuilt according to the same standards as the original in 1991. Another influx of wealth occurred in the 1990s. Many homeowners razed or destroyed homes that were built in the 19th century and early 20th centuries.
