Anchorage is located in Southcentral Alaska at the terminus of the Cook Inlet. It's on a peninsula that is formed by the Turnagain Arm and the Knik Arm. The City of Anchorage was merged with the Greater Anchorage Area Borough in September 1975 to create the Municipality of Anchorage. The 1,961.1-square-mile municipal limits encompass the urban core, a joint base for military personnel, many outlying communities, and nearly all of Chugach State Park. This is why less than 10% of the municipality is populated. The highest concentration of people is in the 100-mile city area, which is located on a promontory near the inlet's headwaters. It is also known as Anchorage, the City of Anchorage or the Anchorage Bowl.
Anchorage is located almost at the same distance from New York City, Tokyo, and Frankfurt, Germany. It can be reached by plane in 10 hours. Anchorage is also within close proximity to nearly 90% of industrialized countries. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport serves as a frequent refueling station for international cargo flights. It is also home to a major FedEx hub that the company describes as a "critical component" of its global network.
