More about Orange, California

This small community was established under the laws of California on April 6, 1888. Orange was the first city in Orange County to have been planned around a plaza. This earned it the nickname Plaza City. Orange was the first town to be connected by the California Southern Railroad, the nation's second transcontinental railroad line.

It experienced its first growth spurt in the last ten years of the 19th century, due to increasing demand for California-grown citrus fruits. This period is sometimes called the "Orange Era". The rapid growth of the population was also influenced by Southern California's realty boom from 1886-1888. This boom was fueled by railroad rate wars. As in most Orange County cities, agriculture was the backbone of the local economy. Growth continued to be slow and steady until the 1950s when a second realty boom spurred development. Large tracts of housing were built from the 1950s through the 1970s. This was in response to the creation of a freeway that connected Los Angeles' central area with outlying areas such as Orange. It continues today at the city's eastern edge, though at a slower pace.
