Oceanside was founded in 1798 by the Spanish who established Mission San Luis Rey de Francia de Fermin de Lasuen. Mission San Luis Rey was the largest mission in California during the Spanish period. However, the Mexican secularization law of 1833 saw the mission and its community decline. The former mission lands were converted into an oceanfront resort, and the name of the community was gradually changed to Oceanside.
