Cahuilla is the ancestral homeland of Cahuilla. This division of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians is also known as the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. They share oral traditions of how they lived on these lands for more than 10,000 years through their bird songs and funeral songs.
This area was originally known as Old MacDonald Ranch. However, the name changed to Palm Village when date palms began to be planted in the 1920s. Local historians claim that the principal residents of Palm Desert pre-1950 were Cahuilla Indian farmers from the now-extinct San Cayetano tribe. However, a few Montoya family members of Cahuilla/Spanish descent were notable leaders in civic life.
In 1943, the first residential development was made in the vicinity of an Army maintenance camp. Later, the site was developed into El Paseo, an upscale shopping area similar to Rodeo Drive. The Palm Desert Corporation started developing real estate in 1948. In 1951, the area was given its current name.
