Orange County was named after the main commodity crop that made up the county's primary crop. Orange County had a total of 80,000 acres of citrus planted at its peak in 1970. Orange trees' dark green leaves and the sweet scent of their orange blossoms filled the county. By the end of the 20th century, there were fewer commercial orange groves. Most groves were destroyed in the freezing temperatures of December 1983, January 1985, and December 1989. This was the worst winter since 1899.
