Hampden County, like most Massachusetts counties, exists today as a historical-geographical region and does not have a county government. In 1998, all functions of the former county were taken over by state agencies. While the sheriff and other regional officials have specific duties, they are still elected to service duties within their county. However, there is no county commission, county council, or other county governing body. For sharing services, communities can now form their own regional compacts. The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission includes Hampshire County and Hampden County.
